"I have the name brand version of this item, but needed a spare for my young son. I'm torn on whether I should just spend twice the amount for another name brand, or let him use this one.The problem is the aluminum housing is cut pretty sharp, not rounded on any of the corners or edges especially where the rod enters. It would be VERY easy for someone to score the side of their rod on the sharp aluminum while inserting in a hurry, like while landing a fish, or such. Score line then equals rod snapping on the next big fish.I will probably just take a file and some green abrasive pad to it and round off the corners... But buyers should be aware of the issue. This product would be a home run if they took the time to round and polish down the corners and edges so they weren't sharp.Edit - Changed my mind; just going to return it. Not worth the risk to expensive rods, going to get the name brand version."

Definitely not as easy to use as the "original," as it takes a little more fidgeting to get the rod into the foam for a secure hold. It might loosen-up a bit over time, too. But, two of these for half the price of the "original" makes this a no-brainer! No regrets!john franks
