"Casey is the outgoing, sunshine in a bottle hockey nepo baby, but like who is good at his job lol. Landon is an anxious introvert who barely speaks and has recently been called up to the NHL to replace a goaltender who got injured. Casey being the sweet kind amazing human that he is, offers Landon a room in his massive house so neither of them have to live alone and Landon doesn’t have to worry about finding a place for however long he is on the team. Of course through Casey’s determination, they become quick friends. They both have MASSIVE crushes on each other but for their own reasons, do not pursue a relationship… until they do.I had so much fun reading this book. I instantly fell in love with both Casey and Landon. I loved them so much as people and them eventually as a couple. I adore opposites attract and this is definitely the case for this book. Casey and Landon are practically opposite in every way and yet they complement each other so well as friends and then more. Seeing them bring out different parts of themselves and grow as people with the support of each other was so sweet to read. I loved how their families interacted and played part in their love story as well. I know a lot of people didn’t like that Casey was sleeping around in the first half of the book but I really didn’t have any opinion on it, positive or negative. Like, to me it made it seem like Casey was distracting himself from his feelings for Landon in whatever way he could. Another thing! The casual intimacy between these two characters of being able to admit and talk about their fears and desires… perfection! Now for my spoiler thoughts: There were so many times I wanted to hit Landon upside the head for his stubbornness and how he made decisions. Like after christmas spent with their families, I really thought his perspective had changed a little and wanted to pursue something long lasting with Casey but nooooo he was being a dummy. I kind of wish Landon had to do more groveling to win Casey back but I understand why they got together the way they did. They both were willing to do whatever it took to be together. I still stand by bring back groveling 2025 though. I really loved the focus on “non-traditional” views of sexual encounters in their relationship and loved that they were both open to whatever the other wanted and put no pressure on each other to do things they didn’t want to. I absolutely LOVED how when Landon was like ig if you want to sleep with other people you can to satisfy that need Casey was like babe you're it for me whatever sex looks like for us is more than enough for me and I always have myself if you ever don’t want to do things. The love, acceptance, and intimacy of being able to be your truest self was just magical to me.So yeah. Amazing book. Loved every second even when it made me cry."

I was blown away by this book. Having freshly read for the first time the Game Changer series of books, I thought i'd likely covered Rachel Reids pinnacle of MM Hockey romance books, but no, this one was I think my favourite. The book is lighter, more open to the joyfulness of the budding romance between Landon and Casey, which I appreciated after the turmoil from The Long Game. Don't get me wrong, this book had me weeping in bucket loads too, but I really felt for this couple, and was willing them to make it through to a happy ending. So far and i've read more than a few MM Hockey romance novels recently, this has been hands down my favourite read to date. I worry now i'm running out of material, so Rachel, keep writing more please :)

Reading a review for a romance book is very different to reading reviews about books…

Reading a review for a romance book is very different to reading reviews about books in other genres. Reviewers of romance books often inject much more of their personal feelings about whether they like a character’s behaviour or the choices they make in the story, reviewing that aspect rather than the quality of the writing. You will often see negative reviews given to a book simply because the reader didn’t agree with a character’s behaviour, rather than whether it was a well written book. And this is what I’ve tended to see when reading reviews about this book. People were giving this book a negative review simple because one of the characters slept around quite a bit when he was single and the other main character seemed a little bit rude to people. All I can say is please dismiss those reviews and grab yourself a copy of this book. Because this is definitely a well written book and one that deserves its time in the spotlight. This book is a beautiful character study that takes its time to look beneath the surface and examine the experiences that helped form who we are. What makes us act the way we do. What directs the course of our life and makes us who we are today. To see someone’s actions and to write them off is to miss the opportunity to explore what really motivates people to do the things they do. So to dismiss a book because you prefer your characters to act more like a vapid Mills and Boon knock off is to miss the opportunity to see a perfectly balanced character study of grief, of fear, of sadness, and watch it unfold as characters heal and relationships form. Because that is what Rachel Reid has managed to achieve here and seeing that play out through the eyes of Casey and Landon is pure joy. There’s a lot of healing and a lot of care in this book. With characters who are complex and fully formed filling nearly every page, not to mention the slick and witty dialogue that effortlessly weaves it way through the story. These all add up to make this a perfectly balanced emotional, and often comedic, read that lifts this book head and shoulders above her Game Changer series. With perfect pacing and expertly written hockey scenes, this is a well written book by an author at the top of her game. And if I was forced to judge this book solely on whether I personally liked the two main characters, then I’d have to say that “I loved it!” Because Rachel Reid has written two incredible main characters that you can’t help but fall in love with… even when she adds the annoyingly formulaic 11th hour break up scene, you can forgive her for that. And even though this is a book with romantic “tropes”, you’ll be hard pressed to find any author who writes the grumpy/sunshine tropes as wonderful as we have seen here. Casey is just the most adorably written character that fills your heart with sunshine. Rachel Reid brought a real innocence to him that tugs at your heart strings in the most beautiful way. And as for Landon, the depth she gave to this lonely man was magnificently transformed through her sensitive writing, taking his grief and sadness and turning into the most beautiful love story. As with so many good books like this, you find yourself turning the last page with a twinge of sadness. In this case it’s partly because you have to say goodbye to some wonderful new friends you’ve made during the course of the book, not knowing if you will meet them again. And partly because you know it will be a while before you get the chance to read another new book from this incredible author, as she’s not as prolific as some other MM romance authors out there. But if her next book is half as good as this one, I know it will be worth the wait.4.5 Stars

Aaah! My new favourite Rachel Reid book! A perfectly soft, funny, spicy, sweet mm hockey romance that hits the spot.Casey is such a lovable character, he made me smile on practically every page. So open, guileless and honest. Such a wholesome, uncomplicated character, his goodness leapt off the page, it was a joy to experience his fall into love with Landon. And Landon! So much grief and emotion wrapped up in a stoic, awkward, talented and insecure man who could not see his self worth through his grief and anxiety. Following Landon’s journey as he gained confidence, explored his own likes and desires and found parts of himself he didn’t think existed was a truly delightful experience, and the respect and consideration they showed each other was truly refreshing. The differences in the characters of Landon and Casey, Landon being so closed off and inexperienced and Casey being so wide open and emotionally and sexually free really highlighted for me the effect that grief and emotional trauma can have on people’s lives. And Rachel wrote this so well. Landon and his family not dealing with the emotional fall out and unresolved grief shows how it can affect the trajectory of your life and permeate and affect every facet of that life and relationships.Rachel Reid managed to wrap all this up in a funny, tender, sweet romance with excellent pacing, the perfect amount of tension and angst brought on by the uncertainties and reality of being players in the nhl and ahl at the mercy of transfers and injuries. It was also lovely to read an mm hockey romance set in a world where being queer raised no eyebrows or controversy. Accepting and supportive friends, team mates and family. I love Rachel Reid’s Game Changer’s series, for completely different reasons (omg the tension and yearning with Ilya and Shane is still God Level😘) but Time to Shine is a perfect change of pace and I very much enjoyed it.5 sexy, funny, soft spoken stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
