"Like many Iris Chang fans I was shocked and saddened by her suicide; I wondered why she'd do it. Then I read her last book"

This history of Chinese Americans is not only thorough and well-researched and cited; it also offers a synthesis that still holds up now over twenty years after its publications. The takeaway lessons are more pertinent than ever as divisive rhetoric from the few seeks to divide the many from banding together as humans, when ultimately, what we have in common spans generations, continents, cultures.Chang’s prose is very approachable and keeps a good pace; although many themes repeat themselves over the course of history, there is little repetition. My main complaint with the book as read in Kindle is its formatting. Although footnotes are linked and numbered, other notes (like source citations or clarifications on statistics are not numbered, nor are they linked to their corresponding text and citation at the back of the book). There were also randomly italicized clauses and numerous misspellings that I found surprising, given how long this text has been around. Hopefully the Amazon/Kindle team will improve the links to the notes and the copy-edits in future versions.Overall, a true American classic.

This is my second book from the author. I strongly recommend reading all of her books. It's such a loss that she is no longer with us. Her writing captivates me and wants me to learn about China.

I am so sad that Iris Chang is no longer with us. This book is absolutely exceptional. And it’s a real page turner. I cannot wait to read the rape of Nanking. If you are interested in Chinese history, this is a must read.
