"There is a reader for every book. I was not the reader for this one.2.5 stars.Coming in around 500 pages, the book is overly descriptive in times it doesn't need to be. I found the over describing to take away from the story, not add to it."October, the middle child of autumn, drastic in its extremes, demanded attention with its temperatures swinging between summer remnants and the child of impending winter."That's doing too much to tell me it's currently October. The first half of the story I was incredibly bored. Every time our MC starts thinking about her past, she gets all floaty and lyrical, but it doesn't give us more information, it simply adds words. I know there will be lots of readers who absolutely adore this writing style, I am simply not one of them.Once she reaches the Flower Farm, she's been in survival mode for so long she doesn't know how to trust anyone, she refuses to say thank you (which honestly, just rude), and she's lucky the people that she met were willing to give her so many chances. I would not have. I would have taken her closed off, disinterested temper, and left her be. She would not have healed with me.Once she finally starts opening up, the book does get better. But by then, you're about 75% through the book. That's a long way to go just for it to finally get kinda good (hence the .5 star).Thank you to Sourcebooks Landmark for the e-arc via NetGalley!"

How is it possible to have read your favorite book of the year in February?…
How is it possible to have read your favorite book of the year in February? To feel heartbroken, affirmed, and filled with joy by reading someone else’s survival story? To have experienced multiple sides of both the best and worst experiences of a human?Just like the seasons of a flower, Leigh grapples with each phase from surviving to thriving by planting new approaches to life, facing what she’s been through, and growing through the hurt, guilt, and shame that have followed her to harvest new ways of being. Leigh’s story of survival expands into so much more and as she grapples with the trauma she has been forced to carry, you are able to see the person she’s always been begin to bubble up to the surface. I loved every moment of her peeling back her past hurts, facing the absolutely worst things someone can go through, and reclaiming her strength. Jackson’s Flower Farm provides Leigh the time, space, and support to flourish and start wanting things she didn't know were possible.Jackson, whew! The man he is! Truly can’t put into words how his character was so refreshing and raw. His care and steadfastness transcended the page, and his ability to be lovingly direct was a delight to read.Shelton Harris's prose is so layered and evocative that I could not put this book down, and I'm still thinking about Leigh's journey more than a week after finishing one of the best books I have read. I’m truly in awe of this author’s ability to make you feel everything so deeply you are able to walk alongside each character, baring witnessing to their growth, and providing an empathetic shoulder for them to lean on.Do whatever you need to do to read this book as soon as possible!donna a

Star Rating: 5/5 ⭐️Genre: FictionFormat: 📖Release Date: 2/17/26Length: 484pTerah Shelton Harris is a new author for me and what a beautiful story she gave us with Where the Wildflowers Grow. Her writing is magnificent, a message from the heart and an unforgettable story. The heart of this story is about a woman’s journey in a very dysfunctional family, the tragedy she endured, the horror she witness as she watch the people she loved most perish. Leandra Wildes is the last of the Wildes. It is a poignant story about survival, grief, redemption and an emotional journey learning to accept the help you need allowing you to move on from just existing and start living.“The truth is this: I died at the bottom of a ravine in South Carolina and was reborn on a flower farm in rural Alabama. I buried the girl I once was and became the woman I didn’t know I could be. It took a little help; I wasn’t so easy to find.”Leandra finds herself the only survivor of a bus crash, a bus that was transporting her to a new prison. They all drowned leaving Leandra with a rare opportunity – turn herself in or escape. She is a woman that knows how to disappear and keep a low profile. Now known as Leigh, she plans but plans can easily be crushed.Leigh finds herself stuck in Camden, Alabama, this small town was not her intended destination, not a plan where she could get loss and disappear among crowds. However, this small community offers her the sanctuary she needs no questions asked. And when the bus is discovered, Leigh finds herself on a floral farm in Gee’s Bend where Jackson offers her the ability to remain unseen and isolated. In Jackson we not only find a love interest but a gentle patience flawed man that is a constant presence and guidance for Leigh to discover want she really wants to be.Where the Wildflowers Grow is a quiet story about small but courageous choices; that to stay and have confidence to trust and it is okay to let people in.brenda walker

Where the Wildflower Grow by Tereh Shelton Harris is an extraordinary novel that really addresses family, what makes a family, what would you sacrifice for family. Leigh as the main character experiences loss, struggles, and knows she has to keep moving. The novel mostly takes place in rural Alabama.Leigh is chained into a transport van being moved from one prison to another when the bus goes off the road and lands in a body of water. Leigh’s journey starts by being the only survivor and she walks away. She finds a flower farm that needs help and finds a sanctuary for her. It is there that she finds others who care and help her face her challenges. Leigh starts to face herself and grows along with the farm. The past however is not gone. The book is written smoothly. The reflections from the past are woven into the story that allow the reader to understand more about the characters. The characters are well drawn even with all the human foibles and scars. The sacrifices people make for their family. I truly believe Where the Wildflower Grow by Tereh Shelton Harris is a tremendous novel.therealmc

Instead of being a tale of two cities, this is a tale of two selves!Where the wildflowers grow is a tale of both the yin and yang of life! There is light, and there is dark! Lila didn’t have the best start in life thanks in part to her physically absent father and her emotionally absent mother. Then her mother invites a predator into their house who first repeatedly takes advantage of her, then her daughters and all that entails.Despite all of this and having served time in prison, Lila has the opportunity to step into the light and really learn what it means to live, love, and be loved! Loved this book with all of my heart and highly recommend this book that filled with beauty and depth! Those looking for a heavy read filled with hope, beauty and joy should definitely check out Where The Wildflowers Grow by Terah Shelton Harris! Still thinking about it as we speak!jannie

This book drew me in from the very beginning. It was extremely effective to tell this multilayered survival story from the main character’s point of view. This was her story from the very beginning and I was with her all the way.In some ways, it reminded me of Delia Owen’s Where the Crawdad Sings, not in the story per se but the magical backdrop of the marshes of North Carolina for Kya in that book and Leandra/Leigh in South Carolina and ultimately Alabama. The similarities between them is of a young girl abandoned without having any of the tools needed to connect to the world. Leandra/Leigh, our main character here is just that young woman and by her telling us her story as she sees it, we are in the world of someone raised off the grid by a schizophrenic father and abused mother. She is expected to protect her younger sister from the evil of the larger world. Leigh is the lone survivor of that family. We don’t know why or how until much later. At the book opens, Leandra is a prisoner being transported from one prison to another. We don’t know why she is in prison but overtime the reader can start filling in some of the blanks. The prison bus speeds off the road and plunges into a river. Leandra, having been taught to breathe underwater for long periods of time, is the sole survivor. She takes money from the dead prison guards and walks into the woods to hide. When she gets as far as she can on foot, she takes a bus far away from the accident scene. The bus, however, breaks down and Leandra stays, first as a housekeeper at a campgrounds and then is hired at a wildflower farm on a nearby island. This is where the story takes off.Leandra, now Leigh, is drawn to the owner Jackson, who has a big dream for his farm. Jackson has a personal history that makes him perceptive and empathic. Leigh makes a family with Jackson and his two workers, Luke and Caleb among the flower gardens her sister loved. It is on the farm that she is able to process her grief, accept the past, relinquish some of her guilt, and face the demons that consume her.She is a fully developed character as is Jackson who tenderly helps her in her journey. The writing is lyrical and in some cases mesmerizing, although I think overwritten in parts. Leigh is a character that will remain with me. With help and the loving guidance of the characters on the wildflower farm, she finds enough peace within herself to do the hardest thing of all.I highly recommend this novel. It is a beautiful read and shows us that even in the deepest despair, redemption is possible when the circumstances are right. I plan to read this writer's other books. She is a gifted storyteller. What Customers Talk About
