"Rich, beautiful saturated colors. The metallic colors have such a beautiful sparkle. Although the watercolor paints are great quality, the included water color pens are inferior. It started losing hair from my first stroke and never stopped! Buy for the watercolor but throw out the pens."

I haven’t tried the brushes yet but the colors are really vibrant with good depth. I purchased them on a special for about $20 which also came with watercolor paper for free. It was a great deal and the paints are perfect for my needs. I would definitely recommend and purchase them again.karen k

ok so the unboxing experience. - the main box arrived with some minor damage to the corners, the tin has a slight little ding in the middle of the back in line with the hinge lock, so there was some rough handling in shipping at some point. That said, the inside is fine, the tin is usable, even after the paint is gone, I can see using the tin for storage of my other art supplies. On to the insides. First thing I noticed was how flimsy the plastic inserts were. Like I am honestly scared to try to put the brush and waterpen back in the storage slots in the lid, because of how the plastic insert bends under pressure. I know, I didn't buy this set for the inserts, so I am not docking for that, but I am not likely to use them for mixing or anything either, given how thin they are. right now I am just keeping the sponge in the lid. Sadly the paint cubby bottom insert is just as flimsy. I was kind of looking forward to reusing these for self mixed colors once I moved to a bigger set of paints but, uh, yea - I'll end up tossing the inserts totally once the paint is gone. I bought some nice reusable half pans in case the insert cracks before the paint is finished so I can move the paint over to better containers. Now - the paints. I've been using colored pens and pencils like forever. The last time I worked with watercolors was back in college, and I have an old set of Koi colors by Sakura. The Grabie 50 color set has a lovely range of premixed shades, some of which are sheer classic colors and some of which are more uh, modern or even acrylic type pigments - solid, smooth shades that are quite intensely pigmented. I was impressed with how much I could cover with a fine swipe, like for lettering, brush calligraphy, or drawing with some of these paints, although they are still blendable after drying, unlike acrylic paints (well because they are watercolor, and should be). The solution to that for layering paints would be to do like a fine animal glue wash between layers, I suspect, similar to traditional Japanese painting. My only gripe, and its minor - is that the white doesn't have the intensity to act like white over dark, anything- but I have tubes of Chinese white watercolor I can use, so its fine. I think the white in this set will work for mixing better then outlining. Uh, is this a thick paint? No. Its watercolor. By nature these paints are thin. unlike student grade watercolors though (think the prang or crayola brands) these are highly pigmented, and if that lasts through the block, I can't imagine them running out very quickly, since a little paint in water goes a long way.joann draheim
