"Finally, after not being able to use this on the AT trail for 6 days because it would not connect to my phone, I spoke to someone on the trail why it didn't work. On the 1st day it worked great strapped to my backpack harness. That evening of the first night I left the Bluetooth range of my Zoleo for the first time and it would not work for the next 6 days until I asked someone passing the other way why my device wont work and theirs was working fine. Here was the issue: I thought this "should" reconnect after going out of Bluetooth range of the device. Well it doesn't. Of course, I pressed the middle icon on the App. It just showed a spinning icon forever lost in time, spinning for eternity. Little did I know I had to press the green button that brings you to another screen that show's the IMEI number, then I had to press that number to connect back to the ZOLEO when I was in Bluetooth range of the device. Please don't make this same stupid mistake I did. There is nothing on their site that explains this and I am not tech savvy at all. It was a very concerning 6 days on the trail "alone". I did make contact with my wife and let her know it wasn't working after the 3rd morning when I did get some cell coverage. Needless to say she was worried. Other than this issue the device worked very well after this issue."

Have not had the need to use it yet I don’t subscribe to the monthly service for texting, but we have it for the SOS for my son who likes the hike in the mountains on the border of Washington in Idaho and sometimes by himself and I was told as long as it’s charged that the SOS will still work without the monthly service. So we haven’t actually tested it. But for the peace of mind for the SOS alone is very helpful. It seems durable. The size is easy enough for him to put in a coat pocket. Battery life is good enough for a hike or longer. At some point, I will probably get the monthly service. I just haven’t done it yet.austin

As a solo adventurer, my adult children appreciate knowing that I can check in, get emergency help, and always am locatable. The subscription plan is flexible AND can pause cheaply, the reliable device is affordable, and I am very satisfied with how it has worked on three trips so far. Line of sight connection to satellites does not seem to finicky even when camping with a good number of tall trees around. It has audible alerts for messages and is compact enough to carry along without worry.john gilkerson

This thing is cool. It's the only satellite device I have used so I can't compare it to others, but during motorcycle travel in Canada and Alaska the last few years, I went long stretches without cellular. I was able to push a button and let family know I was good whenever I stopped. Through the app on my phone I was able to text with my designated contacts, the device does an automatic check-in with location over set intervals and will also notify if I haven't moved during a certain period. The one-push SOS button is the most important feature.The subscription price for service is fair, and between travels, you can suspend your subscription for $4/month, I believe, so you don't have to re-subscribe next time you use it. New iPhones (and others?) have satellite texting ability, but this is a nice augmentation whether or not you have such a phone.grumpy
