"This Hamilton Beach (model #26009) Waffle Maker (Proctor Silex is the same company) is really great! It makes evenly cooked, light and fluffy, crisp one-inch waffles (3.5 inches x 4.5 inches in size). The non-stick coating works perfectly and the unit's small size guarantees even heating will not be a problem. (The 4x5 in the title of this review refers to the number of depressions in the waffle. Traditionally, 3x5 is a Brussels Waffle, 4x6 is a Liege Waffle. Both are Belgian. Most waffle makers in the U.S. are either round or square, not rectangular. Ergo, they cannot produce Belgian Waffles. But this Hamilton Beach model is as close as I could get. Unless I spend $800 on a 50lb. cast iron unit from a restaurant supply company. Not likely.)Of course, creating a great waffle depends on more than just the waffle maker. For instance, I always brush on a light coating of refined almond oil (smoke point = 495 degrees F.) before the first batter-pour**. If I smell burning oil smoke before the ready-light goes on, I reduce the temperature. With this unit, I set the min/max knob to max. When the pre-heat light went on (after 4 minutes), the oil was just starting to smoke. I poured the batter into the center of the left 4x5 space and then the center of the right space, finishing off any corners the batter had not yet reached. Once the batter touches the grid, the temperature drops and the smoke, if any, stops immediately. Closing and locking the cover presented no problem. Steam started shooting out right away. Steam is 212 degrees F. so smoke has no chance at this point. As this unit has no built-in timer, but asks you to watch for diminishing steam levels, I just set my own timer to 7 minutes (I use whole grain flours and they always take a little longer to cook). Seven minutes later, an absolutely perfect set of two waffles emerged. They lifted out with a toothpick and slid right out onto my waiting serving plate. Then I poured in the remaining batter, set the timer for another 7 minutes and ate a set of fantastic waffles (after adding fresh blueberries and powdered sugar over them).** Whipping egg whites in a separate bowl is a must. Mix yolks, sugar, milk, butter, vanilla, salt (unless its in the butter), and flour, in that order, until smooth. Dump in the whipped egg whites and fold the batter over the egg whites (look up folding on your own - the better you do it, the better your waffle will be). This kind of batter does not run much. Unlikely you'll have any trouble with over-pouring problems. Also, notice there's no baking powder or baking soda in the batter. No yeast, either. None are needed. The whipped egg whites do it all."

We LOVE this little thing! My husband was obsessed with eggo waffles and once he started realizing he didn’t like processed food and wanted to make homemade waffles we got this one. It’s wonderful! Easy to clean, easy to use, cooks waffles perfectly. My husband makes a couple EVERYDAY. It’s also a wonderful size for easy storage but it’s just sits on our counter due to how often it is used but it’s not in the way at all. Would be a good investment to have it even if you have an air bnb with appliances (my sister in law put one in ours) and it gets used frequently. Would definitely recommend if you want homemade waffles.molly

Success! We needed to replace our 40 year old waffle iron after it died. (RIP) We wanted something that would make 2 waffles, inexpensive, small enough to fit in a cabinet and solid enough to last more than a month or two. The stand on Replacement #1 melted from the heat. Replacement #2 was more suited for making pizzelles. This was our third attempt. The waffle maker cooks perfect waffles. On medium setting, the waffles are soft on the inside and slightly crunchy on the outside. The tray has a spill proof ridge. Only downside is that the plates are not removable. That is not so much of an issue because the waffles don’t stick. The plates don’t require heavy cleaning.meg

Now that I've had this iron for 2 YEARS, thought I'd add my review.Overall, for the price, it's a great iron. It's stood the test of time and still cranks out beautiful waffles just like the first day we ever used it.Pros: durable and reliable, easy to store, fast (takes about 5 minutes to cook batter), makes great waffles with deep squares for butter and syrup, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Excellent non-stick coating. I occasionally spray it lightly with pam (perhaps every 20 uses or so) but I've never had a waffle get stuck hard enough to tear. Heats up quickly (about 5 minutes from cold, and about 1-2 minutes to reheat between waffles).Cons: cleaning is so difficult. I usually wrap an extra-large popsicle stick in a damp paper towel to get between the groves. Also, if you over-fill it (which is VERY easy to do), it spits batter at you, on the counter, and down the sides of the iron where it becomes horribly stuck. Lastly, the tops cook way slower than the bottoms, but that's easy to get around with the right method: about 3 minutes into cooking, open the iron and use a fork / tongs/ toothpick to flip the waffles. Lower the lid back down and finish cooking for about 2 minutes longer. This is a good little iron for the average couple on a budget, just be prepared to spend as much (if not more) time cleaning the iron (and its surroundings) as you do cooking the waffles.palau

Bought this same model almost 8 years ago. After 200 or so uses (nearly every 2 weeks) I think the heating element is going. Does everything it's supposed to do, and I certainly can't complain about durability. Ready to order another!brian s
