"I'm a bit of a knife and sharpening enthusiast. My wife says, "There's very little difference between a hobby and mental illness."Pros- It's a nice piece of straight forward design and vintage craftsmanship, they've been making the same knife at the foot of the French Alps for 135 years. It's authentic, not a retrograde copy. It feels good in my hand. Very inexpensive. Simple locking mechanism, little to go wrong. One of my favorite restaurants has lousy steak knives. I'll bring this, might even buy a second one. This will be in the Christmas stocking for my grown kids.Cons- It's very poorly sharpened. It's surprisingly light. I guess beech wood isn't very dense.I've attached two, hard to see, images. One shows the "out of the box" edge on the Brubacher Edge Sharpness Scale score of 300 (a lower number is better. A good Henckles will be about 225 out of the box). The edge was so poor and the bevel so short I couldn't measure the factory bevel angle with a laser goniometer. I sharpened it to 15 degrees on either side, typical for a good blade, on a 1200 grit diamond water stone. The other photo show that I got it down to 160, which is excellent. I bought some scalpels on Amazon that were duller at 205, they must be for students to use for dissection, they certainly weren't for surgery. You'll be happy with the purchase."

I bought this chonky boi out of curiosity, but I think it's going to become my favorite Opinel. It's a full handful and I can get a full grip. Where a No. 6 or 8 seems to be rather precious and at home halving grapes and slicing shallots, the sturdy No. 12 is for robust vegetables: leeks, turnips, rutabagas, potatoes. Very sharp out of the box (I mean brown paper envelope). Bonus -- the carbon steel blade throws massive showers of sparks off a ferro rod.

After buying and using about 200 hundred different modern pocket knives, it turns out that the classic Opinel is one of my favorite knives. Lol. Inexpensive, iconic, and does 90% of the work that my expensive contemporary knives do. Obviously, Opinels are not hard working tools. I use other knives for gardening, cutting rope, etc. But most of the time all I really need is a good slicer, and the Opinel is among the greats for that purpose. As an added benefit, they are very simple to modify. I took a Dremel to a few of these gems in order to make the ergonomics suit my hand perfectly. And there are plenty of ways to stain the wood handles and patina the carbon blades, in order to personalize them to your liking. Opinel can turn knife ownership into a rather fun and inexpensive hobby. The No. 6 happens to be my preferred size, as it fits perfectly in my hand and pocket. It tends to stay in a vertical position against the seam of my right front pocket, approximately where a clipped knife would sit. Look, at the very least you should have at least one of these. Even if you can't use it as your every day carry, there is almost nothing that looks cooler on a fruit and/or cheese platter. There's just no reason not to have an Opinel knife.

If you appreciate sharp blades, then this carbon steel will not disappoint. Requires a modicum of care, but will develop a wonderful patina with use.
