"Although I have no interest in psychotherapy, nor in psychology either save for its cognitive strain, I found this book to be remarkably interesting. Previously, I had read considerably among Gendlin’s academic corpus, albeit with tentative understanding and provisional conviction. Thus I turned to the subject book for a view of his practical or applied contributions. Indeed that decision turned out to be both rewarding and very compelling. Gendlin’s migration of certain of his seminal philosophical ideas to widespread practical application would seem to be unique in the contemporary scene. Additionally, I believe this book enables a more tangible and acute understanding of his academic expositions.This book’s organization, scope, content, and style of exposition are excellent: incisive and fascinating coverage of concepts and methods at a optimal level for a wide readership, without indulging in patronizing verbiage. Whether the case or not, this book exhibits a crispness that normally associates with thoughtful iterative refinement. Regarding this book’s significance, it nicely complements and arguably ranks alongside Gendlin’s academic titles. In effect, this book is in certain regards blue-collar applied philosophy, and I greatly admire his beneficent engagement of human needs in rendering such practical knowledge and value.As to this book’s content that I consider exceptionally appealing, I would cite the following:o Quite valuable chapters: 4. A very important book to understand and figure out practically. Easily mistaken for a typical self-help thing. I have used this practice for 40 years in my personal and professional life as an artist. It is actually a unique psychological extension of Alfred North Whitehead's process thought (initially ignored, but now gaining steam and influence 100 years later. See lecture 8 in Whitehead's Modes of Thought, 1938.) Unfortunately even process philosophers aren't generally aware of Gendlin's practical application here. Focusing gives one more access to the vague, pre-verbal, extended continuum as experienced through the body (prehended through causal efficacy would be Whitehead's terminology). In older hermetic language the body is thought to be a microcosm of the universe, a kind of receptive antenna allowing access to a greater whole. Focusing allows us to drop down below our own usual repetitive analysis, stories, abstractions about what's going on. What's going on down there is often vague, tentative, iterative, crucial. This book will change how you deal with your problems in life. We are all fairly good at focusing on other people's problems while neglecting our own. It is so important to go within, clear space and listen to what our bodies have to tell us. That shift when you focus to get to the felt sense underneath it all is so freeing. It's like taking a weight off the shoulders that you never knew was there. Eugene T. Gendlin keeps this book simple and easy to read, but you will want to take the time to do the work as you read along. As you learn the process of focusing, it will eventually become something you do naturally. You deserve to hold space for yourself and feel the release that comes with the internal shift. Focusing is undoubtedly a very valuable process to improve self understanding and thus get on your way toward growth and healing. I find this, by Eugene Gendlin to be a more simple and straightforward presentation of the process. It also gets into how to get unstuck, which is a very frequent limitation to derive the full value possible. Before its recent issue as a Kindle book I bought two others, which subjectively, to me, were very thorough and complete. But somehow they did not resonate with me. Gendlin does and getting to the heart of the matter as easily as possible is very important. I recommend this book very muchelf
